Getting a concrete water blasting service is a great way to freshen up the look of your Auckland property and bring back the shine that gets lost when your concrete or brick areas get covered in slippery moss and lichen. To make the process even easier, however, here are some considerations to bear in mind about the subtle differences between getting broad, uniform concrete areas water blasted and treated versus getting bricked and paved areas done.
​Concrete vs Brick Water Blasting: What's the Difference?
Water blasting concrete is a slightly different kind of job to water blasting brick areas and pavers. Why? This usually has to do with whatever is in between the bricks. Are your bricks cemented together with concrete or are they held in place by dirt or sand? Or are there shells or pebbles in between? Are there weeds growing out of the dirt in between your bricks? These are some of the factors that we have to consider before pressure washing your bricks as opposed to providing a simple concrete water blasting service where the ground is one big, undivided area.
My Concrete Cleaning Process
As with all my water blasting jobs, I usually recommend to the customer that I do a test wash of, say, a square metre of the mossy area and let them make a decision from there. If, for example, pressure washing will simply cause too much displacement of whatever lies between each brick then a course of moss treatment alone might be in order. If there are weeds growing in between the bricks then spraying and trimming the weeds (usually a couple of weeks after the spray has taken effect) might be the best option. Usually I do spraying and weeding and moss treatment in separate sessions so that one job doesn't interfere with the other. In any case, each job is different and there are different options available to all customers. Having said that, I will provide what I believe to be the best options for the customer to consider for their bricks or concrete in any particular case.
Contours and Puddling Considerations
When applying long term moss treatment after a brick or Auckland concrete cleaning service it is important to get the areas which have been puddling. This means waiting for the water to subside and the dust to be swept away before application of treatment. Otherwise – if the treatment is applied to a puddling area – it may be too diluted to have the proper effect. (For more information on puddling please see here). This may involve, in cases of heavy puddling, returning the day after to complete treatment.
Weather Considerations for Optimal Results
As with puddling, rain, too, can dilute (or simply wash away) the long-term moss treatment applied to your concrete or brick. Most products recommend that long term moss treatment is applied on an overcast day (because if the heat evaporates the moss treatment too quickly it might not get a chance to soak into the area being treated) but not a day where rain is expected. As you can see, there is a balance to be had between the treatment drying out too fast and getting rinsed away entirely.
