Auckland Bin Cleaning

Wheelie Bins, Big Bins, Compost Bins, Residential Rubbish Bins and Commercial Bin Cleaning for All of Auckland, NZ.

Scrubby arrives with his water blaster and various other bin cleaning tools and begins by soaking your bins in a sanitizing rinse. Then Scrubby loosens up all the grime on the insides and pours it out into a special container to take away. Then Scrubby gives everything another sanitizing rinse before getting down into the bins with his scrubbers and scrapers until the insides are squeaky clean. Every process is repeated as needed. Then Scrubby brushes off any cobwebs and gives the outside of the bins a good water blasting, from top to bottom (including the wheels). Finally Scrubby sprays the insides and lids of your (now clean) bins with a scented, antibacterial rinse, leaving them smelling fresh as a daisy! But you may be asking: "should I get my bins cleaned? Do I have to get my bins cleaned?". There are plenty of reasons people in Auckland give for hiring a professional cleaner like Scrubby McTubb to wash their rubbish bins but there is one reason that people often neglect, overlook, and try to forget.

Here's the Number #1 Reason for Getting Your Auckland Wheelie Bins Cleaned and Sanitized by Scrubby McTubb Today.

What's the best reason for getting your Auckland rubbish bins cleaned? So you can stop thinking about them at all!
It's easy to think of the sanitary problems with having dirty, filthy, smelly, and vile bins. It's obvious that bad odour floating out of foul and unsanitary bins attracts flies and cockroaches (and probably rats and mice - certainly germs and bacteria). We all feel slightly embarrassed when we think about how our neighbours or our visitors can smell what's coming out of our grubby and unhygienic bins. Are these all good reasons to get our bins cleaned? YES! But the main reason is that we shouldn't have to be spending any of our precious time thinking about - or even noticing - our wheelie bins at all!
So, if your bins need a scrub, call Scrubby McTubb so you don't have to worry about your bins any more than you already have.

When and How Often Should I Get My Auckland Wheelie Bins Cleaned?

Best Time to Book a
Bin Cleaning

The best time to get your Auckland wheelie bins cleaned is the morning after rubbish collection day. Why? Because the bins are empty and the garbage trucks are notoriously unpredictable. If we try to clean on collection day, it’s easy to miss the moment. But if you wait until the next day, your bins are guaranteed to be empty, and Scrubby can get in and scrub them properly.

If you need them cleaned sooner, and they’re not empty, I can still do it — I’ll transfer the rubbish to a bag, clean the bin, then return the contents — but this adds $10 to the cost and isn’t ideal.

A Fresh Start for You (and Your Wheelie Bins)

Getting your bins cleaned represents more than just tidiness — it's a fresh start. It sets the tone for better hygiene, cleanliness, and a more pleasant routine overall. A freshly scrubbed bin is easier to maintain and far nicer to open and use. It’s a small job with big effects, especially when the weather’s warm and smells get stronger.

Why Not Clean Right After Collection?

Way back in the early days of Scrubby McTubb's Great Bin Cleaning Adventure (for I refuse to think of it as a job) I would ask the customer when, precisely, their bins were due to be collected. When they told me, for example, 9am, I would put that time in my calendar in ink. Black ink, in fact, for extra emphasis, seriousness, and finality.    When, to my dismay, horror, and disbelief, I discovered that garbage trucks did not always collect rubbish at the expected time, I began using merely blue ink to mark the expected collection time and finally, after many weeks of disheartening disappointment, I began marking collection times with a steadily decreasing quality of pencil graphite. The efficiency of my calendar-keeping had but little effect on the consistency of arrival or predictability of schedule of the city's garbage collection trucks. There was no telling, in fact, anywhere in the city, precisely what time they were destined to arrive.

Bin Cleaning Wisdom Gleaned from Bin Cleaning Pain

This lesson – this Wisdom Gleaned from Pain – had first to light upon and then to float about on the surface of my awareness before it eventually sank deep into the lake of my understanding. For many was the sun-baked afternoon when I would arrive at the penciled-in rubbish collection time only to find the rubbish not collected at all. I would drive up -whistling a merry tune - see the chock-full bin, sigh a long sigh, drive down the road until I could find a cool tree to park under, and listen out for the familiar squeaking, revving, scraping sound of the collection truck. Sometimes for hours. Always in despondency. Never with that quaint glow of enthusiasm for adventure which had driven me forth to the Great Bin Scrubbing Adventure in the first place. But alas.

But it is what it is - we need solutions, not problems - and so I took a helicopter view of the terrain and I decided that I would initiate a results-based policy going forward. Therefore, instead of booking in bins to be washed immediately after rubbish collection times, I resolved to clean them the morning after. This has solved the problem.

That being said...

If you know your bins have been emptied and want a same-day clean, that can usually be arranged — depending on my bookings. Just call or text to confirm.

How Often Should I Get My Bins Cleaned?

Warmer months usually mean more frequent cleaning due to smells, flies, and maggots. It’s always best to start with a single clean and go from there based on how fresh you want your property to feel.

Auckland wheelie bin cleaning with Scrubby McTubb

Scrubby McTubb provides a thorough cleaning and sanitizing service for residential and commercial Auckland Wheelie Bins.

How Much is Call Out?

Scrubby McTubb serves all of Auckland but he is based in Onehunga so if your bins are near to Onehunga (say Epsom) your call out fee will be $40 but if your bins are in the outer suburbs (for example, Takapuna) it will be $45 or $50 for the most outer suburbs (say, Papakura).
As a general rule, therefore, if you are at a residential property in one of the central Auckland suburbs (or upper South Auckland, lower North Shore, inner East or West Auckland, your call out fee will be $40.

Bin Cleaning Price

For standard household wheelie bins the price is currently $10 per bin.
For bigger, business sized bins (for restaurant and similar businesses) Scrubby can give an individual quote.

FREE Cleaning for Small Organic Waste Kitchen Bin

If you are getting your wheelie bins cleaned Scrubby can clean your small green kitchen waste bin for free.

How Does Scrubby McTubb Clean My Bins?

Scrubby arrives with his water blaster and various cleaning tools and specialized cleaning products and begins by thoroughly rinsing your bins in a sanitizing solution. Then Scrubby loosens up the caked-on dirt on the inside of your bins and pours out the mush into a container to take it away. Then he sanitizes your bins again and gets down inside with his scrubbers and scrapers until every corner is squeaky clean. Then he begins water blasting the outside of the bins all over - including the wheels - and he brushes out the cobwebs and spiderwebs. Finally Scrubby sprays the insides of your bins and the lids with antibacterial rinse to leave them smelling fresh as a field of daisies!

What If I don't Have A Garden Tap or Water Drainage Area?

It is easiest (and cheapest) if Scrubby can clean your bins on site at your property. All he needs is access to a garden tap and an area where it's okay for water to get on the ground (for when he's water blasting the outside of your bins). However, if, for some reason, this is not an option then Scrubby can bring your bins back to his yard and clean them there. There will be an extra travel fee, however, for this service (usually around $15 per trip for central Auckland areas). Scrubby can usually take up to three bins at a time. To get an exact quote call Scrubby today on 021 0852 7756.

But Why Would I Hire Someone Else To Wash My Council Bins?

Can't I just clean my wheelie bins myself?

Of course you can! And there is nothing stopping you. However, Scrubby has found that the majority of his customers are very busy people - from doctors, to students, to people who are professional cleaners themselves - who have no time, inclination (or spare sets of clothes to sacrifice) to get stuck into a filthy bin for an hour. Also, the tools needed to scrub a bin properly should be devoted to that one task and not used for other cleaning purposes.
Scrubby McTubb has collected a lot of specialized wheelie bin cleaning equipment over the years and has perfected a process to get it all done as efficiently and tidily as it is possible to get.
From cobweb brushes to corner scrubbers, from gum scrapers to wire scourers, from soft-washing fittings to high-pressure water blasting tips. Each wheelie bin needs a slightly different approach depending on its condition and Scrubby McTubb has seen every type of bin condition there is.
Another, oft-overlooked, consideration is that there is no shortage of things you can do for yourself. In fact, philosophically speaking, you could ask this question until you reach the shadowy borders of infinity. For example: why go to a restaurant when you can make a burger yourself? Why get anyone else to do anything at all when, in theory, you could do it all yourself? You get the point. Some people don't.

Why Moss, Mould and Mud Build Up in Auckland

During the wet weeks of winter your property in subtropical and often humid Auckland gathers layers of moss, mould, and mud. The steps become slippery, the pathway gets coated in dirt, and the driveway turns a shade of green. This is all perfectly natural and it is why Auckland water blasting and moss treatment services are an essential part of the local property maintenance scene.

What is Water Blasting and How is it Different from a Hose?

The important difference between water blasting and using a normal garden hose is the pressure. When you try to remove moss with a garden hose the moss will not budge – in fact, in my experience, it is likely to make it more slippery which can be dangerous to walk on. When, however, you use a water blaster, otherwise called a pressure washer, the moss gets blasted into oblivion. This is because a water blaster compresses the flow of the water to make a smaller, but much more powerful stream of water which breaks the grip that moss, mould, and dirt have on your ground surfaces. When long-term moss treatment is added the moss is killed off and prevented from returning for a long time.

Cleaning Up After Storms and Mud Puddling

Some years your whole property, or large part of it, may be flooded by mud during a cyclone or other extreme weather event, leaving your concrete and brick walkways dirty or even caked in mud. When this happens you will not be able to remove all the dirt with a broom and brush and shovel. This kind of clean up job requires a professional water blasting company with the right equipment and experience dealing with mud puddling which is a part of the after-storm cleaning up process. Hiring a dedicated Auckland water blaster with all the right set up and gear is a much quicker, simpler, and more convenient option than doing it all yourself, especially when dealing with awkward shaped bricks and pavers caked in mud. Where I Work: Auckland-Wide, Based in Onehunga

I begin each morning's journey to my Auckland water blasting jobs from where Onehunga meets Royal Oak, almost in the shade of One Tree Hill. It's a handy place to start the day – and a big saving on coffee expenses – because driving through the Royal Oak roundabout has the same effect as ten cups of it. I am, therefore, just a stone's throw from suburbs like Hillsborough, Epsom, and Ellerslie.
Because Onehunga is quite a central location it's all the same to me whether my next driveway cleaning job is in West Auckland or East Auckland. That's why I offer my pressure washing services to all parts of our city. One morning I may have to water blast a pathway in South Auckland and then finish the day at a deck cleaning job on the North Shore. Also, because it's only me – not a big team – I am quite flexible and mobile in my property maintenance schedule and I can work around your calendar. I am happy to talk to you about what time slots work for you and figure out a convenient plan.

A Water Blasting Service Tailored to Your Property

My aim is to make my Auckland water blasting service convenient for you and tailored to your needs. For example, you may want specific attention paid to your deck but only a light pressure washing applied to your concrete retaining wall. Or the other way around. Feel free to have a look at my Google reviews and if you want to see how I can help you bring the shine back to your property call or text me today on 021 0852 7756.

I also offer a small-area pressure washing service. This is for anyone who doesn't necessarily want their whole property serviced but only a specific mossy or dirty section of concrete or brick. There is a full price list, by location, for this small water blasting service at the link shown.

Need Water Blasting in Auckland? Let’s Chat

If your Auckland property needs professional exterior cleaning, I'm your local water blaster. I service driveways, patios, pathways, and any brick ground area or concrete surface. To see more about concrete and brick water blasting click here. I also offer long term moss and mould treatment options which you can choose from as we go. I often recommend that I pressure wash about a square metre of the worst affected area first and get your opinion on what you think we should do. If the moss is particularly stubborn in certain portions but not others I may recommend selective application of treatment. Every property is unique and the moss builds up to different degrees in different conditions.

How Scrubby McTubb Blasts Moss and Dirt Off Your Auckland Driveway, Patio, or Path — And What Moss Treatment Works Best

The first thing I do is consult with you about how soon you want your driveway clean and for how long you want the cleaning to last. Everything below applies to any concrete areas such as patios, driveways, pathways, and pool surrounds.

Need a Quick Clean Before the Photographer Arrives?

If, for example, you have an open home in the next few days, or if the photographer is coming to photograph your property before it's put on the market, then you may just want a simple, short-term clean with immediate results. In this case I can apply short-term, fast-acting moss treatment, and give the area a water blast.

Want Moss Gone for Good?

If, however, you are more concerned with keeping the moss away over the coming year then I can use a long-term treatment which, after application, stays in the concrete, activates every time it rains, and gets rid of moss over time. This particular option can take a few rains to have full effect but the effect is more permanent than the short-term option.

How I Water Blast Auckland Concrete Surfaces

The actual water blasting service itself is performed by me - Scrubby McTubb Water Blasting Auckland - and my petrol water blaster. Depending on what you want I can perform this water blasting service by itself or in conjunction with either or both of the moss treatment options.

Planning For Puddling/Pooling

Once I have set up for the job my first thought is where abouts the "puddling" is likely to occur. This puddling refers to the build-up of water as gravity drains it away from where I am working. Once I have worked out where the puddling spots will be I water blast the moss and dirt away from these areas first. This is so I won't have to be water blasting through a big puddle of water in order to get to the moss at those points.             When I was starting out I learned this lesson the hard way. I was thoroughly caked, up to what the stress of the ordeal had spared of my hair, in mud.

How Long Does Long Term Moss Treatment Last?

According to the products most readily available on the market the time-frame is about 12 months. Some products say that the treatment works for up to 4 years, though I have not been able to test this. The long-term moss treatment I use stays in your concrete and activates every time it rains. If used by itself, this long term moss treatment usually takes a few decent rains to start its full effect. However, its effect is more permanent that using either water blasting or short-term treatment alone. Most products say that in some cases of particularly stubborn moss a second treatment may be required. I have not yet found this to be the case.

My Recommended Course of Action

I usually recommend to any undecided customer that I water blast a square metre or so of the worst-affected area - i.e. the area on the property where moss and dirt are the thickest - to see whether or not either pre-treatment or post-treatment is needed. I find that this test-sample is also a good idea to reassure a customer that getting water blasting done is the right idea. So far it always has been.

I have also covered how I clean concrete and brick surfaces around Auckland which may be helpful to read if you are wondering about the difference between concrete and brick water blasting before you book.

Concrete vs. Brick – Ground Water Blasting Techniques

Concrete Vs Brick Water Blasting

Getting a concrete water blasting service is a great way to freshen up the look of your Auckland property and bring back the shine that gets lost when your concrete or brick areas get covered in slippery moss and lichen. Booking in your water blasting and/or moss treatment session with Scrubby McTubb is as easy and quick as picking up the phone.

To make the process even easier, though, here are some things to bear in mind about the subtle differences between getting a broad, uniform concrete area water blasted and treated — versus getting bricked and paved areas done.

Concrete vs Brick Water Blasting: What's the Difference?

Water blasting concrete is a slightly different kind of job to water blasting brick areas and pavers. Why? This usually has to do with whatever’s in between the bricks. Are your bricks cemented together with concrete or are they held in place by dirt or sand? Or are there shells or pebbles in between? Are there weeds growing out of the dirt in between your bricks?

These are some of the factors that need to be considered before pressure washing your bricks, as opposed to a simple concrete water blasting service where the ground is one big, undivided area.

My Concrete Cleaning Process

Concrete Water Blasting Techniques and Tricks

As with all my water blasting jobs, I usually recommend to the customer that I do a test wash — say, a square metre of the mossy area — and let them make a decision from there.

If, for example, pressure washing will simply cause too much displacement of whatever lies between each brick, then a course of moss treatment alone might be in order. If there are weeds growing in between the bricks, then spraying and trimming the weeds (usually a couple of weeks after the spray has taken effect) might be the best option.

Usually I do spraying and weeding and moss treatment in separate sessions so that one job doesn’t interfere with the other. In any case, each job is different and there are different options available to all customers. Having said that, I will provide what I believe to be the best options for your bricks or concrete in any particular case.

Contours and Puddling Considerations

When applying long-term moss treatment after a brick or concrete cleaning service, it’s important to get the areas that have been puddling. This means waiting for the water to subside and the dust to be swept away before applying the treatment.

Otherwise — if the treatment is applied to a puddling area — it may be too diluted to have the proper effect. (For more information on puddling, please see here.) In heavy puddling cases, I may return the day after to complete the treatment properly.

Weather Considerations for Optimal Outcomes

As with puddling, rain can dilute (or simply wash away) the long-term moss treatment applied to your concrete or brick. Most products recommend that the moss treatment be applied on an overcast day — because if the heat evaporates it too quickly, it might not soak in.

At the same time, you don’t want a day where rain is expected. There’s a balance between it drying out too fast and getting rinsed away entirely.

Why Choose Scrubby McTubb for Your Concrete Cleaning?

At every step of the job, I like to consult with the customer, explain what I’ve done and what I intend to do next, and get their input. That keeps things easy.

All of the considerations I’ve mentioned may make the process of getting your moss removed seem a bit complicated — but it’s really quite simple. Leave the hard work up to me and watch the layers of moss and lichen on your Auckland property roll away to reveal the rejuvenated shiny surface underneath!

To treat or not to treat?

That is the question Auckland property owners consider before (or after) a water blasting session.

Usually the answer comes down to whether or not you're about to put the property on the market. If you're getting your house photographed by a real estate agent or prepping for an open home, you may only want a short-term clean. If, on the other hand, you intend to stay, you may decide on long-term moss prevention to stop the green stuff creeping back over the coming months.

I can usually water blast away all, or almost all, of the moss. But if any stubborn patches won't come off, I recommend applying a long-term moss treatment. It stays in the surface and activates each time it rains.

How I Water Blast Timber Decks in Auckland

The Elongated U Wand Motion

When I water blast a timber deck, I don’t just blast away in every direction. I use a medium-spread attachment on the end of my wand (yes, it’s really called that) and set it to medium pressure.

Then I swing the wand slowly, side to side, in what I call the Elongated U Wand Motion. If you watched from the front, you'd see the tip tracing the shape of a bathtub or the letter “U” with a long bottom.

Why do I curve the spray like this instead of just going back and forth in a straight line?

Because this keeps the water from hitting any one spot for too long. It avoids making marks or outlines on the wood. I also follow the grain of the timber whenever possible to keep things tidy and even.

Believe it or not, I even use this technique on concrete — [you can read more about that here].

Cutting In: A Painter’s Trick

When I was younger — before I knew a thing about water blasting Auckland decks — I worked as a house painter. One of the first tricks I learned was how to “cut in.”

You make a clean outline around where you want to paint. Then, when you brush paint inside that outline, the end of each stroke disappears into it. No jagged edges.

I've found this works great when water blasting too. Especially in tight corners or against deck rails, “cutting in” with the water blaster gives you a crisp, clean look.

Water Blasting Technique: The Elongated U Wand Motion

Learning Water Blasting Techniques in Auckland: On-the-Job Experience Matters

Like many things learned on the job, the best water blasting techniques aren’t in a manual — they’re picked up over years of doing real work on Auckland driveways, decks, and muddy post-storm paths. One technique I’ve developed and relied on is what I call the “Elongated U Wand Motion.” It’s a blend of pressure control, stroke planning, and keeping things tidy and feathered rather than sharp-edged.

Cutting In and Sweep Planning: Where to Begin and End

Whether I’m blasting mud off a driveway or dealing with a narrow, awkward paved area, I always consider where I’ll start and end each sweep. I use a “cutting in” method similar to house painting — outlining the area first — to avoid jagged lines. Once the edge is set, I work inward, letting the main pressure strokes blend into the outline cleanly.

What Is the U Wand Motion?

When water blasting, I swing the wand slowly side to side in a wide motion that looks — if viewed from the front — like the letter U with an extended bottom. At the end of each sweep, I curve the wand up and away. Why? This prevents harsh pressure buildup on one spot and creates a feathered, natural transition. It’s better for both the look and the timber/concrete longevity.

Artificial U Wand Motion in Tight Spaces

Sometimes there isn’t room to swing the wand wide. That’s where the vertical variation comes in: instead of lifting sideways, I change the distance vertically — starting from a bit farther away and smoothly bringing the pressure in closer as I sweep. The same soft feathering effect can be achieved this way, and it works particularly well in corners, near edges, or where surface changes prevent a full sweep.

Advanced Tips for First-Time DIYers

A smooth finish takes more than just pressure — it’s about transitions and attention to detail. Your first time water blasting, you’ll probably face odd angles, conflicting grain directions, and maybe surfaces that shouldn’t be hit with water at all. Swapping wand tips and adjusting pressure on the fly is part of what I do daily. The real trick is knowing when and how to combine them. The job usually takes longer than expected the first time — that’s normal.

“As with life itself, where combinations of problems must be met by combinations of skills, the individual situation always dictates the proportion in which we employ each particular skill.”
